Our Technology Sets Us Apart
what is the Enlighten Laser?
Enlighten™ is the most advanced picosecond and nanosecond laser system for the effective and safe removal of tattoos and benign pigmented lesions.
how does enlighten laser tattoo removal differ from other laser tattoo removal options?
Enlighten features both nanosecond and picosecond technology. Picosecond lasers use extremely short and high-power picosecond laser pulses which efficiently and quickly break down the ink particles in tattoos. A 'picosecond' is one-trillionth of a second, and is 1,000 times shorter than 'nanosecond' pulses. Both nanosecond and picosecond technology are required to adequately breakdown varying sizes of ink particles. Nanosecond pulses are used to break up large ink particles and picosecond pulses are used to breakdown the fine ink particles. Both are necessary to achieve adequate removal.
how many treatment sessions are required?
The number of sessions needed is specific to each person and each tattoo. A variety of factors are taken into consideration including: the age of the tattoo, the color of the ink, the density of the ink, the location of the tattoo, your body’s immune system, and many other factors. Ultimately, the best way to determine the number of treatments is to come in for a free consultation where your tattoo can be professionally evaluated. Most tattoos need between 5 to 10 treatments for complete removal. Our tattoo removal specialists will perform a medical assessment and develop a customized treatment plan to include your estimated number of sessions. The Kirby-Desai scale outlined below can give you a rough idea of some of the factors that contribute to the duration of your treatment and how we estimate the number of sessions necessary. Please note that this is for informational purposes only, and that official estimates can only be achieved through a free consultation.*
why are multiple sessions required?
As we mentioned before, laser tattoo removal requires both time and commitment. Complete removal often times requires multiple treatments. Fortunately, treatment sessions are generally short and typically can be measured in seconds or minutes, depending on the size and colors of the tattoo being treated. At least 6 to 8 weeks are needed between each treatment in order for your lymphatic system to flush out the shattered ink. Patients will see their tattoos fade at different rates depending on the different elements of their tattoo and how fast their body heals. Some patients may see complete removal after just a few months while others may see complete removal after a year. Our Enlighten laser is specifically designed to eliminate ink faster and with better results so that you need the fewest number of treatments possible.
will the tattoo completely disappear?
In many cases, yes. However, it is very important to know that some ink colors are more difficult to clear than others. This is why we offer free consultations, so that our providers can assess all of the factors that will impact your removal and set clear expectations.
is the procedure painful?
Patients compare the procedure to a rubber band being snapped against their skin. Topical or local anaesthetics are available from your provider to minimize discomfort.
are there any side effects following the treatment?
The most common side effects patients experience are redness, scabbing, blistering, and temporary lightening or darkening of the skin. Do not be alarmed if you experience any of these side effects. They are healthy signs and natural indications that your body is healing. We strongly advise you to not touch, pick, or pop any blisters or scabs, as it may impair the healing process. As long as you follow proper aftercare instructions and remember that side effects are normal responses to the procedure, your skin will heal beautifully.
is there any downtime associated with the treatment?
Patients can return to regular activities immediately following the treatment, but are advised to avoid swimming for 3-5 days post treatment. Good sun protection is a must and we advise sunblock over chemical sunscreens.

The Kirby-Desai scale is a medically published scale used in helping to estimate the number of sessions needed to remove a tattoo. It takes into account the patient's skin type, colors in the tattoo, density of the ink and presence of scarring. These factors along with variables such as a patient's health status and the age of the tattoo is what our providers use to estimate the number of needed sessions to reach your aesthetic goals.
